Course Description:
Welcome to 8th Grade United States History. This year students will study the social, cultural, and political changes that occurred on the North American continent from the early colonial period to the Reconstruction period. Starting with European colonization of Native American land starting in the 15th and 16th centuries, students will study U.S. History with a comprehensive and critical eye by examining the social movements, economic trends, and the development of a democratic government with social justice and inequality in mind. In particular, students will study how the seeds of modern day inequality and social upheaval can be traced to the founding of the United States and the major events that occurred during its first century. This year, 8th graders will explore American History through primary and secondary sources, historical synthesis, and a strong emphasis on reading and writing.
